HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY AND OIL AND GAS ENGINEERING

The Department of Geology and Oil and Gas Engineering was established in 2006 in response to the growing need for highly qualified specialists in the oil and gas and mining sectors—key areas of Tajikistan’s economy. Since its inception, the department has aimed to provide students with fundamental knowledge in the development and operation of oil and gas fields. Over time, it has significantly expanded its areas of activity, introducing new directions and deepening scientific research work.

From its early years, the department not only developed educational programs but also actively conducted scientific research aimed at solving practical problems and developing innovative approaches in the fields of oil, gas, and environmental safety. In the initial period, the department focused on preparing basic courses in geology and oil and gas engineering, paying special attention to the study of mineral resources in the Republic of Tajikistan. The department’s educational programs were adapted to market requirements, and teachers developed unique teaching methods focused on the practical application of theoretical knowledge.

In the 2020s, the department significantly expanded international cooperation, beginning interactions with leading universities and research centers from Russia, Uzbekistan, and Central Asian countries. This collaboration allowed the implementation of advanced educational technologies and research methods, providing students and faculty with opportunities to participate in international exchanges and joint scientific projects. As a result, the department gained recognition not only in Tajikistan but also on the international stage.

One of the key milestones in the department’s history was the introduction of modern courses such as safety technologies in the oil and gas sector, geology and field development, hydrogeology, and engineering geology. These courses enabled the training of specialists capable of addressing pressing challenges in the effective and environmentally safe development of natural resources.

The department is proud of its graduates, who have made significant contributions to the development of the oil and gas and mining industries in Tajikistan. Many of them work successfully in major oil and gas companies, such as “Petroleum Sughd,” “SughdNefteGas,” and “Kayrakkum Complex Geological Expedition,” as well as in international companies like “Gazprom,” “Rosneft,” and AO “INKOMNeft.”

Today, the Department of Geology and Oil and Gas Engineering continues its development, adhering to international standards in education and scientific research, making significant contributions to the scientific and technical progress of the country. Each year, the department organizes an international scientific and practical conference titled “Development of National Industry and Geology of Tajikistan During the Years of Independence,” timed to coincide with Tajik Geology Day, celebrated on December 9. This conference brings together leading scientists, researchers, and industry specialists to share knowledge and experience, making the department one of the key scientific centers in the region.
